Admin./ biographical historyBlack Jack Public House in Portugal Street, London was located near to the old King's College Hospital, London. Some surgeons, on becoming Members of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, signed their names in a signature book at the Black Jack. The Black Jack was demolished in approximately 1902.
Scope and ContentThe volumes consist of signatures, with occasional comments and illustrations, by young surgeons upon becoming members of the Royal College of Surgeons. The books were located in the Black Jack Public House in Portugal Street. The signatures in the volumes range from being neat and clear to almost illegible. This is perhaps a consequence of their location in a public house.
Volumes 1 and 2 are labelled "Drs Books" on the front. The first signature in volume 1 is Thomas Webb Fryer of Bristol and is dated 4th Feburary 1854. The last signature in volume 3 is Herbert Lovell Carr-Smith of Charing Cross Hospital, dated April 22nd 1892.
In volume 1 there is a sketch of Edward Stanley, the President of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1857.
