Admin./ biographical historyThomas Wormald was a General Surgeon, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1843). He was one of the original 300 Fellows. He was apprenticed to John Abernethy in 1818 at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He taught Abernethy's junior students and assisted Edward Stanley in his work as Curator of the Hospital Museum. During his apprenticeship he visited schools in Paris and the surgical practices of Dupuytren, Roux, Larrey, Cloquet, Cruveithier, and Velpeau. After Abernethy's resignation, Wormald became House Surgeon to William Lawrence in October 1824. In 1826, he became Demonstrator of Anatmy conjointly with Frederic Carpenter Skey at Barts. In February 1838, Wormald was elected Assistant Surgeon, then full Surgeon in April 1861, and then Consulting Surgeon in April 1867. He was also Consulting Surgeon to the Foundling Hospital from 1843 to 1864. At the Royal College of Surgeons of England, he was a Member of Council from 1840 to 1867, Hunterian Orator in 1857, a Member of the Court of Examiners from 1858 to 1868, and Chairman of the Midwifery Board in 1864. He served as Vice-President in 1863 and 1864, and was elected President in 1865.
