Admin./ biographical historySir Alexander James Edward Cave was an Anatomist and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1959). He was Demonstrator then Lecturer at Leeds University, and was Senior Demonstrator of Anatomy at University College London. In 1935, he was elected Assitant Conservator of the Hunterian Museum and then as Arnott Demonstrator under Sir Arthur Keith. In 1940, he was appointed Professor of Human and Comparative Anatomy, where he was responsible for the allocation of anatomical subjects to evacuated metropolitan medical schools. After the Second World War, he was appointed Professor of Anatomy at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He wrote extensively on comparative anatomy and palaeontology, particularly on the archaeological material in the Hunterian Museum. At the College, he was also an examiner for the Conjoint and the Primary exams, the Wood Jones medallist in 1978, and from 1956 he was an Hunterian Trustee.

Scope and ContentThe collection contains large numbers of illustrations of skeletal bone structures some human, many primate and non-primate animals.
There is also correspondance between Cave and W.R. Le Fanu (Librarian at the Royal College of Surgeons of England) concerning Le Fanu's proposed edition of the letters of John Hunter. There is also correspondence between Cave and Dr. T. Stanley Westoll of Marischal College Aberdeen concerning the crania of young chimpanzees and gorillas. Letter to Mr Dean, 27 September 1979, answering questions posed by Mr Dean regarding: raven and gorilla styloid muscles; levator palati (with illustrative diagram); the surtachian process; Osman Hill and orang sinus of Morgagni
