Admin./ biographical historyWilliam White Cooper was a General Surgeon and Oculist. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1845). From 1834, Cooper studied at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and became a private pupil of Edward Stanley, who was a surgeon there. In 1838-1839, Cooper took notes of Sir Richard Owen's lectures on comparative anatomy given at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The notes were later published as "Lectures in the Comparative Anatomy and Physiology of the Invertebrate Animals (1843)." Cooper had a large practice, and was one of the original staff of the North London Eye Institution. Subsequently he became Ophthalmic Surgeon to St Mary's Hospital Paddington. In 1859 he was appointed Surgeon-Oculist in Ordinary to Queen Victoria.

Scope and ContentThis collection has simply been arranged into diaries, journals and scrap books. The two diaries cover 1859-1886 (from his appointment to Queen Victoria until his death). The journals cover the history of earlier White Coopers, White Cooper’s own early life, and then various anecdotes and reminiscences. The scrap books largely contain condolences after White Cooper’s death and social items such as calling cards and invitations during his later life.
