Admin./ biographical historyHarold Gillies was a Plastic Surgeon, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1910). Gillies undertook his medical training at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, qualifying in 1908. During the First World War, Gillies joined the R.A.M.C and whilst on leave in Paris he met Hippolyte Morestin, a pioneer in maxillo-facial surgery. This meeting convinced Gillies of the need to start special treatment of facial wounds and he managed to convince the War Office to allow him to set up a unit in at Aldershot. Gillies pressed for a hospital of his own and with the help of Sir William Arbuthnot Lane the Red Cross was persuaded to build a hutted hospital at Sidcup. After the war, Gillies set up private practice, was elected to the staff of St. Barts, and was appointed Consultant in Plastic Surgery to many establishments.
