Scope and ContentAccording to Keith's account (Item 2 below), these are illustrations to accompany Huxley's paper which he read to the Zoological Society on 8th November 1864. He later gave them to Dr Slater in the Society's library but failed to deliver the text to him before his death. Keith concludes that Huxley simply did not have the time, when he was trying to deliver 24 Hunterian lectures as well as numerous other projects.
This file contains the following:
1. Five previously unpublished plates illustrating the craniology of young anthropoid apes. Each bears Huxley's autograph signature and that numbered Plate IV by Keith (although Huxley left no indication as to their order) has "7/7/64" under the signature. 5 folios.
2. Annotated typescript of "Account of five unpublished Huxleyan plates illustrating the craniology of young anthropoid apes" by Sir Arthur Keith. In it Keith tries to interpret the contents of the plates, without the aid of Huxley's text. 48 folios.
3. Reproductions of the previously unpublished plates, which accompanied Keith's article when published in the "Proceedings of the Zoological Society", Volume 119, 1949. 5 folios.
