Admin./ biographical historyThomas Spencer Cobbold was a Helminthologist and Botanist. He was appointed a Lecturer on Botany at St Mary’s Hospital, London in 1857 and at Middlesex Hospital in 1861. In June 1864 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. From 1865 he practiced medicine in London, specialising as a consultant in cases of suspected internal parasites. In 1868 he was appointed Swiney Lecturer on Geology at the British Museum. In 1873, he was appointed Professor of Botany and later Helminthology at the Royal Veterinary College. He was also a Fellow of the Linnean Society and was President of the Quekett Microscopical Club in 1880.
Cobbold’s publications include 'Entozoa: an Introduction to the Study of Helminthology, with Reference more Particularly to the Internal Parasites of Man' (1864), 'The Internal Parasites of our Domesticated Animals' (1873), 'Tapeworms': their Sources, Varieties and Treatment' (1866, 4th edn,1883) and 'Parasites of Meat and Prepared Flesh Food' (1884). Cobbold also contributed to various encyclopaedias as well as to the Journal and Transactions of the Linnean Society.
