Scope and ContentA bound volume containing 19 watercolour floral images dated 1801, complete with an index compiled by William Clift on Oct 1, 1837. The volume has dark red leather on the spine and corners and the spine has gold floral detail and is titled “Paintings by Agricola”.
The title page states:
"Presented by the Executors of JOHN HUNTER; Dr Mathew Baillie, and Everard Home Esq 1801"
There is an additional note: "NB. These paintings in water-colours had been Mr Hunter’s Property; and were not the Gift of the Executors. Wm Clift"
and a further note by Clift: "These drawings when presented, were loose in a portfolio, and were bound by the College Bookbinder, who has done it in a very slovenly manner, by disarranging misplacing and inverting several of the descriptions; and stamping the arms half-way through the volume. WC 1837".
There is also a note saying : "Paintings & drawings by Agricola an eminent Italian painter" which could be in John Hunter’s hand.
A pencil note in the volume probably by William Le Fanu, the College Librarian, states:
"Probably the drawings are by Ferdinand Bauer (1760-1826) (or possibly his brother Franz Andreas Bauer 1758-1890) both of whom worked in London in the later years of Hunter’s life."
