Scope and ContentThis collection contains a number of volumes of manuscript notes taken at lectures given by William Hunter in the mid to late eighteenth century, where the note taker cannot be identified.
1) Volume containing notes on Anatomical Lectures begun in 1758. The donor believed the book to have belonged to his grandfather or father. (The blank pages in the volume have been re-used as a child's drawing book) [Previous reference: 42.a.23]
2) Notes on anatomy lectures by "Dr Hunter -83." The volume contains a contents list and 62 pages of manuscript notes of lectures on anatomy. The name "Goldwyer" is written on one of the first pages, and the initials "WG" are impressed into the front inside cover. This possibly refers to William Goldwyer, surgeon at Bristol in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. A note of an example from the Bristol Infirmary appears on page 39, relating to diseases of bones. [Previous reference: 42.a.31]
3) Notes of [William] Hunter's lectures on the Operations of Surgery, Sutures, and Diseases of the Alimentary Canal. There is a contents list at the start of the volume. [Previous reference: 42.a.32]
4) Anatomy Lectures, William Hunter, 1755. Volume containing manuscript notes of 90 lectures by William Hunter. At page 87, there are some brief notes of a lecture by Dr Monro at Edinburgh. [Previous reference: 42.a.64]
5) Lectures upon Anatomy by Dr Wm Hunter, 1776. The volume contains notes on anatomy lectures by William Hunter (page 1 to 65). Following the lecture notes are some additional notes on various subjects: a copy of a letter from Dr Oliver to a friend, dated Bath, January 20th 1780; a copy of a letter from Dr Fruins to Dr Roberts of Hertfordshire, dated Oxford, August 6th 1749; Latin notes titled De Supra Arabum; and notes on the Barometer. At the end of the volume is a index to the Hunter lecture notes and a section of notes on Scrofula. [Previous reference: 42.a.77]
6) Anatomical Lectures by Doctor Hunter Wherein all the parts of the Human Body , and their several uses are explained together with all operations on surgery and the manner of performing them. The volume contains 371 pages of manuscript notes of the anatomical lectures, although it is noted by James Blake Bailey in Victor Plarr's catalogue of manuscripts (1928) that the volume does not actually contain the Operative Surgery section. 7) Lectures by Dr William Hunter, volume 1. Volume containing 407 pages of manuscript notes on Dr Hunter's anatomical lectures, written only on the right hand pages. These notes are dated at page 135 as October 1771. At page 135, a new set of notes begins written in the same hand, on the left hand pages. These notes are on the same subjects as the notes on the right hand pages. The notes on the left continue a few pages beyond the end of the notes on the right. The first page contains notes in a different hand, written in Latin, titled Notes for Introductory Lecture. This is possibly the hand of John Hunter. [Previous reference: 42.c.28]
8) Lectures by Dr William Hunter, volume 2. The volume begins at page 408 (right hand pages) dated 29th November. There are also notes beginning opposite page 408 on the left hand pages. This volume follows a similar format to the previous volume. At page 774 there are some notes on bandages, written in a different hand, noted by James Blake Bailey to be that of John Hunter. (see Victor Plarr's Catalogue of Manuscripts, 1928) An index appears on the final page of the volume. [Previous reference: 42.c.29]
9) Lectures Anatomical and Chirurgical By William Hunter, Physician Extraordinary to her Majesty, Professor of Anatomy to the Royal Academy and Fellow of the Royal and Antiquarian Societes, 1775. The volume contains a contents page and 213 page of manuscript notes. There is an index at the back of the volume. The volume contains the bookplate of Sam Merriman MD. [Previous reference: 42.c.31]

Volume containing 86 pages of manuscript notes of lectures 1 to 10, with an index at the end.This is the first volume in a series of three. 13) Dr Hunter's on Anatomy. Volume of manuscript notes on anatomy lectures. The lectures are mainly given by William Hunter, referred to as Dr Hunter, but John Hunter is occaisionally referred to, as Mr Hunter, for example on page 12, demonstrating an experiment. The inside front cover contains a bookplate of the anatomist John Barclay (1758-1826), and a portrait of Barclay. Also on the inside front cover is name of James Hector (later Sir James, 1834-1907) with an address in Edinburgh, where Hector had studied medicine. [Previous reference: 42.d.5]
14) Anatomical Lectures deliver'd by William Hunter. Professor of Anatomy, London, 1763. Volume containing 735 manuscript pages of notes on 86 lectures, with a contents list of the lectures at the back of the volume. [Previous reference: 42.d.6]
15) Lectures on Anatomy by William Hunter MD, read 1775-1776. The volume contains 525 pages of manuscript notes for 96 lectures on anatomy. The first page notes that the lectures were given by William Hunter, but the surgical lectures in the volume when they appear are noted as being given by William Cruikshank. This includes lectures 6, 19, 20, 36, 41-46, 64-68, 72, and 82. At the end of the volume from page 526 to 543 is a lecture titled "The Art of Embalming Dead Bodies". This lecture was delivered by William Hunter MD on January 13th 1776. [Previous reference: 42.d.11].
16) Doctor Hunter's Lectures on the Gravid Uterus, and Parturition etc. In Feb and March 1768. The title on the spine reads "Hunte, Lect on Midw." The volume contains 105 pages of manuscript lecture notes, as well as an index to the lectures at the back of the volume. On the inside front cover is the bookplate of Sanuel Merriman MD. 17) Lectures on Anatomy and Surgery, by Dr Hunter taken in the year 1778 to 1779. Volume of manuscript notes of lectures given by William Hunter, beginning with an introduction. There are then a number of blank pages before a new section begins titled "Cellular Membrane." From this point the volume is numbered pages 1 to 666, with an index at the back. There is a book label on the front inside cover giving the name JL Taylor, possible a previous owner of the volume. [Accession Number: ADDMSS338]
