Admin./ biographical historyHenry Cline was a Surgeon and a Member of the Company of Surgeons. He was a surgical apprentice at St Thomas's Hospital, London where he lectured for Joseph Else, the lecturer on anatomy at the hospital. When Else died in 1781, Cline bought his preparations from his executors, and was appointed to lecture on anatomy. Three years later Cline succeeded Thomas Smith as a surgeon to St Thomas's. Astley Cooper became Cline’s pupil in 1784. In 1796 Cline was elected a member of the Court of Assistants of the Company of Surgeons. In 1810 Cline became an examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and in 1812 resigned his appointments at St Thomas's. In 1815 he became master of the College of Surgeons, and in 1816 delivered the Hunterian oration, which was never published. He gave the oration again in 1824. In 1823 Cline was president of the College, the title having been changed from that of master in 1821.
