Scope and ContentLectures on Surgery (title on the spine). Volume containing 522 pages of manuscript surgical lecture notes. The volume is divided into three sections. The first is titled "Dr Hunter's Lectures, Volume the first." This section consists of lectures given by [John] Hunter on Surgery, arranged as aphorisms. The section contains 174 pages, with 571 aphorisms. This is similar to the volume of lecture notes of John Hunter transcribed by Charles Seager, but originally compiled by Charles Brandon Trye. (See MS0198). The Seager transcription contains 1754 aphorisms.
The second section begins on page 177 and is titled “Dr Hunter’s Lectures, Volume the 2nd.” The section consists of notes on lectures beginning with “The Bones,” also arranged as aphorisms. The volume follows directly on from the previous section, but the aphorisms begin at number 1 and are not consecutive from 571. The second section ends at page 351 and contains 647 aphorisms. Page 352 contains a recipe for Arsenical Caustic recommended by Dr Cheston. The number of aphorisms in the first two sections total 1218, therefore being an incomplete transcription in comparison to the volume by Charles Seager (MS0198). The third section begins on page 353 and is titled “Mr Cline’s Surgical Lectures.” Howver, on the final page of this section (page 522), at the end of the text is the sentence: "Lectures of Dr William Hunter and Mr Cline" indicating that the notes are those of William Hunter and Henry Cline. The volume is bound in vellum tied with twine across the inside front and back covers.
