Scope and ContentFourteen of the illustrations are marked "BJS" [the British Journal of Surgery]. The other fifty-seven illustrations have some reprographics markings and annotations, but no further details related to their publication.
Illustrations with captions by Gordon-Taylor include:
Drawing showing "Left-sided abdomino-thoracic wound showing fragment lodged in upper lobe of left lung (from the War Collection in the Royal College of Surgeons destroyed 10 May 1941)
Diagram illustrating "wound track of case of German Medical Officer"
Diagram illustrating "case of British solider in whom a gastric perforation was missed through imperfect attention to medical history and a misplaced abdominal incision"
Drawing showing "Seminoma of left testicle. The patient had experienced pain the back for a year before seeking surgical advice: a painless enlargement of the testicle rather larger than a cricket ball was discovered (Mr Holmes Sellors' case)"
Drawing showing "Seminoma - nodule in spermatic cord, too large for tuberculous "Beading"
Drawing showing "Seminoma of right testical: painless enlargement for 5 years: sudden rapid growth before removal"
Drawing showing "Spindle-cell sarcoma of adductor longus with giant cells and Myxomatous areas; local removal and recurrence 5 months later. The original tumour was somewhat remarkable in occasioning unbearable pain, which disappeared with the removal of the tumour. The recurrence was also exceptional since it took place in the distal portion of the adductor longus."
Drawing showing "Rhabdomysarcoma of Deltoid of male of 78 years from the Department of Pathology University of St Andrews. By kind permission of Professor Cappell. The tumour was large, despite a history of only 2 or 3 months."
Drawing showing "Spindle cell sarcoma of pectoral muscle; history of painless lump for 6 weeks, growth more rapid in later weeks. Tumour shows no capsule and is seen to be infiltrating both the overlying fat and the adjacent muscle. The tumour is partly cystic and also shows several haemorrhagic areas."
The illustrations are arranged in two folders: (1 of 2) and (2 of 2).
