Admin./ biographical historyGeorge Ray was a Surgeon, and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was apprenticed to Mr Beckingsall of Sarum, before entering Guy's Hospital, London on 11 May 1815 (no. 355). He was entered for 12 months and was granted his certificate on 29 April 1816. During his career he was Medical Officer No. 1 District Milton Union, and Union House.

Scope and ContentThe volume contains 'Lectures on Surgery, Delivered at the theatre of St Thomas's Hospital by AP Cooper, Esq in the years 1815-1816.' The notes are taken by George Ray, whose name is inscribed on the fly leaf, 'George Ray, Guy's Hospital, 1815.' An index of lecture titles called 'Surgical lectures' has been bound into the volume. The first 18 lectures follow the pattern stated in the lecture titles, but subsequently the titles do not correlate with the content of the volume.
A newspaper clipping (no date) is adhered to the inside front cover titled 'The Country Surgeon (A True Bill),' and contains a poem about the life and work of a country surgeon.
