Admin./ biographical historySir Astley Paston Cooper was a Surgeon, who lectured in anatomy and surgery at the Company of Surgeons (later becoming the Royal College of Surgeons of London after 1800, and then England after 1843) between 1793 to 1796. He was elected as a Professor of Comparative Anatomy at the College in 1813-1815. He became a member of the Court of Examiners of the College in 1822, and he served as President twice, in 1827 and 1836.

Alexander Henry Bartlett was a Student at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals, London, where he was dresser to Sir Astley Cooper in 1822 and 1823. After qualifying he settled at Ipswich where he was first elected to the Dispensary. In 1825 he was appointed Surgeon to the Gaol. He had an important share in the establishment of the East Suffolk Hospital, and headed the poll at the election of surgeons in 1836. He served on the active staff of the hospital for forty years and then became Consulting Surgeon.
