Admin./ biographical historySir Astley Paston Cooper was a Surgeon, who lectured in anatomy and surgery at the Company of Surgeons (later becoming the Royal College of Surgeons of London after 1800, and then England after 1843) between 1793 to 1796. Cooper’s lectures were known to be practical, usually based on his own cases and experiences. A compilation of notes based on his lectures was published in 1820 titled 'Outlines of Lectures on Surgery', which went through many editions. His publications also included 'A Monograph on Hernias' (published in two parts between 1804 and 1807). He was elected as a Professor of Comparative Anatomy at the College in 1813-1815. He became a member of the Court of Examiners of the College in 1822, and he served as President twice, in 1827 and 1836. His case notes, letters, and illustrations allude to points in his career, including his apprenticeship under Henry Cline, his tour in Paris with his wife, Anne Cock, and his surgical practice at Guy's Hospital in London.
