Admin./ biographical historyEdward Charles Hulme was a General Surgeon, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1849). After his apprenticeship in Totnes, he entered St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and in 1840 was appointed Student in Human and Comparative Anatomy of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His autograph manuscript preserved in the College describes the work he did in this capacity. He dissected a chimpanzee, elephant, leopard, apteryx, wombat, and other specimens. His reports were countersigned by John Flint South and by Arnott. The octavo volume containing his MS. includes the MS. of G. R. Skinner, student of anatomy in 1850.

Scope and ContentThe volume contains the notes of Edward Charles Hulme, Student in Human and Comparative Anatomy 1846-1848, and George Robert Skinner, Student in Comparative Anatomy, 1849-1851.
The first part of the volume contains the notes of Hulme. The first page is titled "Edward Charles Hulme October 12th 1846"
Pages 1- 67 contains notes on dissections of various animals including the Chimpanzee, Sciurus Vulgaris (red squirrel), Cynocephalus, Wombat, Leopard, Ateles, Elephant, and Honduras Turkey.
Pages 14-23, 25-29, 35, 40-41, and 68-73 are blank pages.
Hulme's work has been countersigned by John Flint South, Professor of Anatomy and Surgery, James Moncrieff Arnott (Member of the Court of Examiners 1847-1865), and Caesar Henry Hawkins. (Members of the Court of Examiners 1849-1856)
The second part of the volume contains the notes of Skinner, beginning on page 74. The first page of this section is titled "This part of the book is written by George R Skinner May 14th 1850"
Pages 76-205 contains details of his work in dissections, preparations, and compiling a manuscript catalogue in the Museum. His dissections included a Rhinoceros, Puff Adder, Ostrich, malformed foetus, and a Malayan Tapir.
Pages 90-92, 101, 105-107, 109-138 are blank.
Skinner's work has ben countersigned by James Luke (Member of the Court of Examiners 1851-1868), and Frederick Carpenter Skey (Member of Council 1848-1867)
There is a brief index for both Hulme and Skinner at the reverse of the volume.
