Admin./ biographical historyDavid Henry Monckton was a General Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1865). From 1850 to 1852, he became a Student of Human and Comparative Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and acted as Hunterian Professor.

Scope and Content"Diary of Occupation, as Student in Human and Comparative Anatomy to Royal College of Surgeons of England." The volume contains manuscript diary notes on Monckton's activities when a Student of Comparative Anatomy at the College from June 1850 to April 1852. Activities included sorting and cleaning specimens, remounting preparations, writing descriptions of preparations, and carrying out and describing dissections. The volume also includes occasional drawings and sketches.
The volume includes a letter regarding the donation of a specimen from Mr W Thomas, MRCS, of Pembroke Dock, dated 7th April 1852, alongside the entry by Monckton describing the specimen and what he was doing with it on the 16th and 17th April 1852.
An entry under May 4th 1852 includes a statement from Monckton in response to the Museum Commitee of the Council's recommendation that more time should be spent recording activities in the student's books as the records were "less complete and more concise than desirable."
At the back of the volume, an inserted page provides a summary of some of the content of the volume. It is titled "Extracts from the Student's notebooks, relating to animals dissected, preparations made, and descriptions of them."
Monckton's work is countersigned by James Luke (Member of the Court of Examiners 1851-1868) and Frederick Carpenter Skey (Member of Council 1848-1867, and Professor of Anatomy and Surgery from 1852).
